We're in the last 16; our aim is to get over this next hurdle.<br /> <br /> At the top level, you need to be able to defend well, but to win you need to score one more goal than the opposition – otherwise it's a penalty shoot-out. We've worked hard, looked at our potential defensive concerns and tried to be as solid as possible. We only conceded once in the first three matches and that was a penalty – we'll need more of the same.<br /> <br /> Ireland have a lot of heart, they work very hard – but it's not just that, there's some good footballers in that team. In their first three matches, they kept the ball on the ground even though they play a more direct game, as they have forwards who are suited to that style and pick up the second ball. There's some good players – Whelan, Hendrick, Hoolahan if he plays, McCarthy, Shane Long – and they know what football's all about.<br /> <br /> Mental strength doesn't make you score goals, but it is important. Ireland are an example of that – they show great solidarity and hard work. We often talk about the famous 'fighting spirit' but they don't just do that – they give everything. It's almost genetic. They're ready to go into battle, as a unit, and they will fight all the way for each other. The approach is within ourselves. You know you're going to come up against top-quality players, whether they're in midfield, forwards or about the best defenders going. The players come up against this sort of quality all the time and they're ready for it. The French have some very, very good players, who play for big teams.<br /> <br /> The players who played [against Italy] showed that level and intensity, which they kept up for 90 minutes – that takes its toll and rest has been the most important thing for us. It's a matter of ticking over; it's tournament football and you've got to rest up. We have to cope with it, get on with it, and if the players have recovered in time to show the same effort and zeal as the other night, we'll be ready for it.<br /> <br /> The nature of the game is when you don't have the ball you're trying to deny them space. But I always find great players will find that space and hurt you – and France have some great players. France are hosts and favourites for the competition. They remind me in some ways of 1998 – great pressure but they improved as the competition went on and eventually won it. This team might feel the same.<br /> <br /> I've spent my time [in charge] sending out adventurous teams to win games. We played a very adventurous game against Sweden, and weren't allowed to do that against Belgium. Against Italy we needed some extra energy in the team and we got that. <br />This is a make-or-break kind of match. We are moving into the knockout rounds now and this match will only send one of two excellent teams into the next stage of the competition. The other team will unfortunately be sent home.<br /><br />We are facing a team consisting of extremely talented individuals. They perhaps weren't exceptionally impressive in their group in terms of points won, but they really played well. If we look back, we will remember that they were the dominant team in their matches and created many opportunities.<br /><br />When a team plays the way we've been playing, a knock-on effect is that the coach gets his share of praise as well. Coaches always influence results, both good and bad. Unfortunately, that is more visible with bad results than good ones. I accept the praise I've been getting.<br /><br />I am not content, though, just like the team is not content. We want to keep going for as long as possible at this tournament. After a long time, we finally have this atmosphere of togetherness in Croatia. Everyone is watching our matches on TV, everyone is rooting for us.<br />Highlights: Portugal v Croatia 20 years on<br /><br />Stats mean nothing. There are two very strong sides. I have as my objective to try and win this game. Croatia have immense quality, just like we do. It will be a game with two sides full of great quality and sides who want to go through. It will be a great game, I'm sure. I think we can beat Croatia.<br /><br />It will be a totally different game to the ones we've had. Austria did things well against Portugal, and a lot of people thought we'd beat Iceland but it didn't happen. We are prepared to play a completely different game.<br /><br />Croatia have had a little bit more rest time. Obviously we'd have liked more time and I'm sure Croatia would've too. Coach Marc Wilmots remains confident and has said he won't change his philosophy. It's not a happy camp though, with players and pundits criticising tactics and selections. Against Ireland, Belgium will have a creative player in the centre, either Kevin De Bruyne or Eden Hazard. Who plays centre forward is anyone's guess, but Michy Batshuayi looks to have the skills to find holes in a packed Irish defence. They have already achieved a big aim by making it through to France at the expense of Serbia, Albania's big rivals, and anyone underestimating this squad should just be pointed towards their 0-1 win over Portugal in Qualifiers.<br /> <br /> Gianni De Biasi has got this squad playing and believing in one another and that saw Albania finish above Denmark in the Group to make it through to the Finals. A lack of goals could be a big problem for Albania in trying to find the points to make it through to the Second Round, but they will also defend deep and make themselves hard to beat to try and upset the odds in Group A.<br /> <br /> Albania have won 3 of their last 10 games and they were beaten 1-3 by the Ukraine in their last friendly. The key will be to not come into Euro 2016 thinking their goal has been completed but Albania have lost 4 of their last 9 games to Portugal, Serbia, Austria and Ukraine. It is potentially an indication that the extra quality in the Finals might be a step too far for this nation.<br /> <br /> <br /> <h2> Switzerland</h2> <br /> They have become a feature of major international tournaments these days with Switzerland having Qualified for three of the last four European Championships and each of the last three World Cups. However this nation has never made it out of the Group Stage in the European Championships and are looking to match their Second Round appearances in two of the last three World Cups.<br /> <br /> The approach has changed for Switzerland with more belief being placed in their attackers under manager Vladimir Petkovic than there was under Ottmar Hitzfeld. The results were not as strong in Qualifiers though and Switzerland lost twice to England in that section, although they will be expecting to make the Second Round at Euro 2016 and preferably before the last game against France.<br /> <br /> Switzerland beat Moldova 2-1 in their final friendly ahead of this tournament and that also ended a run of 3 consecutive losses.
