Mike Phelan saw his pre-match press conference interrupted by a firm alarm yesterday but, thanks to last weekend's win over Leicester City, there was no other cause for immediate panic ahead of tomorrow's trip to Swansea City.
Although Hull City remain a club desperately ill-equipped for the Premier League, with neither a permanent manager nor a signing of note this summer, at least the opening day demonstrated there is a team unwilling to be dragged into the mire.
They still need help before the transfer window closes – and lots of it – but the sharp focus of Phelan and his players is containing a full-blown crisis. The professionalism of this group is keeping City afloat against a backdrop of uncertainty from the boardroom down and for that they deserve no end of credit.
To all intents and purposes, the pressure will be off the Tigers when they arrive in South Wales. They remain the Premier League's underdogs and already boast a total that most supporters would have gladly accepted at the international break next month. Reproduce the performance of last week and there is no reason why three points cannot become four.
