The Gers raised the Championship flag and should be glad to be facing the type of opposition they dominated last season. They have drawn the lowest ranked side still left in the competition and nothing other than a comfortable victory should be on the cards.

Peterhead caused a few shocks of their own to get this far in the League Cup. A 2-1 win over Dundee and a bonus point away to Dumbarton saw them top the group. But their league campaign started with a 4-0 humbling at Alloa on Saturday.

Simon Ferry was missing from that side and Nicky Riley came off the bench as he recovers from injury. They are both big players for The Blue Toon although they were also absent for the victory over Dundee.

Rangers will be keen to get back to winning ways after a flawless group campaign. Four wins and four clean sheets is the kind of form the fans expect at Ibrox. But they will have to contend without Martyn Waghorn who pulled a hamstring at the end of Saturday’s match.

The true extent of his injury is yet to be revealed. In his absence Joe Dodoo could come into the reckoning. Furthermore we may also see the likes of Michael O Halloran and Harry Forrester get a starting berth.

Forrester impressed again after coming on for the ineffective Niko Kranjcar in the second half. The former English Premier League star looked sluggish and uncomfortable against the Hamilton youngsters.

Meanwhile the Rangers rearguard was found wanting once more against higher ranked opposition. But they should maintain enough possession to keep Peterhead at bay.
