The clash of the titans or the Swedish version of El classico – that is what we have on the plate on a Wednesday evening when we take our sights to Gothenburg to go in depth about this rival meeting. The rivalry is not due to geographical reasons, but simply because these sides are constantly debating about which team is the most successful one in Swedish football.

Malmo entered this season with a record expensive squad, and expected to form some kind of dynasty with all their money gained from European success in recent years. We have tons of real life examples that proves that money is not a guarantee for success, and it appears that Malmo have been victims of that as well. After two shocking losses versus newcomer Jonkoping Sodra and Sundsvall, the coach Allan Kuhn appears to have given up on his idea of playing attractive and instead goes back to basics. Going back to basics means that Malmo put defense in the first seat, and it has been giving instant results with two straight 1-0 victories against good opposition (Elfsborg away and Djurgarden at home). It might not be pretty, but it brings in three points. Malmo were being out-countered in the first few rounds and conceded too many goals in order to win games and as a result, the team have come back down to earth and plays a smarter football with more possession but without any rush going forward. It has led to two very controlled performances without many scoring chances, but enough to win the games
