Match preview: Sevilla FC v FC Barcelona

<br /><br />Barça are without Marc-André ter Stegen  through injury while Neymar Jr and Rafinha are representing Brazil in the Olympic Games. Douglas, Samper and Jordi Alba have been left out of the 18-man squad for technical reasons.<br /><br />Sevilla keeper David Soria is unfit, and will be replaced by reserve stopper José Antonio Caro. And that’s not the only concern for the Andalusians, especially in defence where Carriço, Kolo and Nico Pareja are all unavailable. But it looks like defensive midfielder Iborra will be able to play.<br />Coaches’ viewpoint<br /><br />Speaking at his Saturday morning press conference, Luis Enrique said that “Sevilla look different this year. They’ve made a lot of changes. I like Sampaoli’s philosophy. It’s attractive for the fans. Sevilla is a well-structured team that has set standards in Europe and in our league.”<br /><br />His counterpart Jorge Sampaoli adds that “the best way to defend against a team that likes to play the ball so much is to try and get the ball off them. If we can match them for possession, we’ll be able to hurt them.” He also commented on how much he is looking forward to a reunion with his compatriot Claudio Bravo, who captained the Chile side that he coached to the 2015 Copa America title.<br />Form guide<br /><br />Barça have won three of their four preseason fixtures, against Celtic, Leicester and Sampdoria, but lost 4-0 to Liverpool at Wembley. Luis Enrique was quizzed on Saturday about the high number of goals, nine, that his team has leaked in these games. But it’s not a matter he is too concerned about, saying that unusually high scores are quite normal in warm-up matches like those.<br />

It’s match day and today we welcome Wagga City Wanderers to Hooka Creek Park (Macedonia Park) for our Round 7 of the FFA Cup, kickoff at 7pm. Wagga City will be no push overs as they make the 4 hour trip to Wollongong and will be looking to cause a big upset. The match comes at a relatively good time as we look to bounce back from a heart breaking loss over the weekend in the league. Coach Jacob Timpano and his men will be looking to take the club into the Round of 32 where we will have a chance at facing off against an A-League side.<br />

“They will be a tough team and will be no push over. I’ve been keeping track of their results in the state league, they have been consistent in scoring goals. From what I hear they have a few players from the UK that a quite good.<br />

“I don’t think the trip for them will work against them, sometimes traveling as a squad can bring the team closer together.<br />
<br />
“In saying that playing at home should always be an advantage for us.” Coach Jacob Timpano said.<br />
New signing Josh MacDonald will feature during the match and looks to be a valuable addition to the squad as Jacob Timpano looks to add depth to his attacking options. MacDonald joins the club off the back of the 2015/16 A-League season from the Western Sydney Wanderers where he made 2 first team appearances for the Sydney siders.<br />

Rangers vs Peterhead Match preview

The Gers raised the Championship flag and should be glad to be facing the type of opposition they dominated last season. They have drawn the lowest ranked side still left in the competition and nothing other than a comfortable victory should be on the cards.<br /><br />Peterhead caused a few shocks of their own to get this far in the League Cup. A 2-1 win over Dundee and a bonus point away to Dumbarton saw them top the group. But their league campaign started with a 4-0 humbling at Alloa on Saturday.<br /><br />Simon Ferry was missing from that side and Nicky Riley came off the bench as he recovers from injury. They are both big players for The Blue Toon although they were also absent for the victory over Dundee.<br /><br />Rangers will be keen to get back to winning ways after a flawless group campaign. Four wins and four clean sheets is the kind of form the fans expect at Ibrox. But they will have to contend without Martyn Waghorn who pulled a hamstring at the end of Saturday’s match.<br /><br />The true extent of his injury is yet to be revealed. In his absence Joe Dodoo could come into the reckoning. Furthermore we may also see the likes of Michael O Halloran and Harry Forrester get a starting berth.<br /><br />Forrester impressed again after coming on for the ineffective Niko Kranjcar in the second half. The former English Premier League star looked sluggish and uncomfortable against the Hamilton youngsters.<br /><br />Meanwhile the Rangers rearguard was found wanting once more against higher ranked opposition. But they should maintain enough possession to keep Peterhead at bay.<br />

Tonight, Real Madrid hosts one of the best teams in the league, Sevilla. The current Europa League champions will be visiting the Santiago Bernabeu tonight looking for their first win away from home of the season. The team from Sanchez Pizjuan sits comfortably on 5th position on the table and is looking to knock Villareal off that last CL position at 4th, especially after beating the side last week at home. Sevilla will be using all of their resources on the wings to hurt Real tonight, especially Konoplyanka, who depending on who Madrid places on RB will have a big impact on his game, I think we all remember how Danilo dealt with him last time, so maybe, just maybe Carvajal would be a better option.<br /><br />Los Blancos don't have many things to fight for in this competition, but Zinedine Zidane will still give minutes to the starters to see if the team finds their groove after some mediocre displays over the last few weeks. While Madrid usually perform well at the Bernabéu, they need to improve away from Madrid quite a lot if they want to be competitive in the Champions League this season.<br />

<br /><br />I make my way to Jerusalem's Central Bus Station on foot from the three bedroom apartment of my wife's parents. We're here in Israel for the Passover vacation to bring the grand children to see their Saba and Savta. But while I'm here, I also get to ingest copious amounts of kosher meat from the many restaurants that are available to me. In Jerusalem alone, there are literally hundreds of restaurants I can go to and eat everything on the menu. In Denver Colorado, there is one kosher meat restaurant. It's in the back of a Supermarket. It is, how should I say this? Not exceptional. Unless the height of cuisine for you is putting grilled pastrami in between two potato pancakes. Or tasting fajitas in week-old tortillas with freezer burned meat.<br />
<br />The walk takes fifteen minutes, through the newer part of Jerusalem, the western part, built between 1900 and today. The older part, called ‘The Old City', is within the medieval ramparts of Suleiman the Magnificent, built in 1535 as a stronghold of the Ottoman Empire. It has buildings that go back to 1000 BCE. Nonetheless, the modern city took a hint from its ancient fore-bearers and made a rule: any building constructed anywhere must be composed mostly of Jerusalem stone. It gives the city its golden color in the late afternoon as I set out for the bus station. The walk takes me past half a dozen middle eastern restaurants, selling meats spinning slowly on a spit deeply seasoned with turmeric and hyssop. It goes past stores that sell religious articles like the fringed waist-shirt of the ultra-orthodox, called tzit-tzit. One store is ‘THE Watermelon Center'. They sell nothing but watermelons. Think about that as a business model in the US.<br /><br />The bus station itself is a new-ish building, five stories high, with a blue-green glass clock face at the center. Outside, three orthodox men on keyboard, guitar and alto sax are playing a not-terrible but heavily accented rendition of Frank Sinatra's ‘I did it my way' across from where the light rail train drops off. Security - which, sometimes in Israel, can require wanding and bag checks of every patron to every location: supermarkets, movie theaters, the bus station, is somewhat relaxed. I walk into the central lobby with its long book stand and it's cellphone kiosk, overshadowed by a series of escalators rising above like scaffolding. Shops and fast food can be found on the first two floors, and buses on the third and fourth.<br />

<br />JDT II’s first half of the season was inconsistent (15 points from a possible 33), but their form picked up in the second half as they went unbeaten in their last nine matches. Impressively, JDT II lost only one home game, but drew the most matches in the division (eight) to finish fifth.<br /><br />The perception<br /><br />JDT II are the JDT of the Premier League, with star players like Singapore captain Shahril Ishak, ex-Real Zaragoza striker Braulio Nóbrega Rodriguez, and national player Zaquan Adha.<br /><br />The reality<br /><br />JDT II are JDT’s development side. Their role is to give promising youngsters regular first-team football, being guided by experienced pros like Shahril and Braulio. Most of the players are below 25 years old. As such, they struggled to compete with other Premier League sides and six of their nine league wins came against the eventual bottom three.<br /><br />Strengths<br /><br />The Southern Tigers are a good defensive unit, keeping seven clean sheets, which was the joint-highest in the Premier League. Further up the pitch, Shahril and Aznie Taib combined well to support Braulio, sharing 18 goals between them.<br /><br />Weaknesses<br /><br />The young players’ inexperience costs them sometimes, and they are often too reliant on several key players to pull them through. Besides the big names, there are not many other sources for goals. <br /><br />The player to watch<br /><br />Shahril Ishak. Despite only scoring four league goals, the Singapore captain is the most influential player at the club, with most of their goals involving him. Deployed in a roving role behind Braulio, Shahril is free to drop deep or push forward as he wishes.<br />
